2020: Top 5 interior design requests from clients

March 20, 2021 | By

2020 has been a year of changes. Staying indoors became essential and with that, we adapted to a newer set of interior trends for our homes. While some of the conversions were subtle, some became an integral part of our daily lives. In this blog, we’ll share 5 home decor trends that were most common within our clientele.

Wondering how our clients availed interior design services in the middle of nationwide lockdowns? Well, that’s where Sheraspace’s first of its kind service – the Online Interior Design Consultation came in! Here are some of the significant home decor trends we observed taking place last year. In this blog, read the top 5 requests made by our clients for their homes.

1. Decorated Balconies

A well-adorned balcony can seem no less than an oasis in the middle of a house, which is why the idea was a major trendsetter last year. One of the ways to deck it up was adding a swing from the overhang so one could sway away with a book during a lazy afternoon. Or simply, using rattan outdoor chairs have made for a great unwinding zone. Rugs and pillows have been used to make the space cosier. Small but vibrant herb corners kept people busy and allowed reconnection with nature. Sounds calming? It sure is!

2. Indoor plants

Talking about herb gardens, gardening has not just been limited to balconies thankfully! People consciously started listening to their green thumbs and began incorporating more greens indoors, to an extent where it became an invariable part of their homes. Plants like snake plants, pothos, wild ivies, air plants and spider plants are not only easy to maintain but also add an oomph of warmth to your kitchen countertops, worktops, and even in bathrooms sometimes. Play around with displaying them in pots made of different materials like terracotta, jute, mason jars and paint them if you want to add a fun touch. Name any surface or corner – we’re sure it can be enhanced using planters!

3. Window bench

At the end of a hectic day you would naturally want to relax at your favourite spot admiring nature, wouldn’t you? Window benches are the perfect solution to your craving and a smart way to convert a tight corner into a functional space. You can make it a reading nook with shelves or by using the built-in storage underneath the seating. Plump it up with some bohemian or ikat printed cushions or keep it low with layers of neutrals embellished duvets and rugs; your contemplation zone, your call.

4. Home office

The idea of a workstation at home has not only been a trend but an eye-opener as to how much we were missing out on our interiors. As we were all given the opportunity to work from home we started realizing how there should be a separate zone in our homes to draw a line from our professional lives to our personal. Having a dedicated space to work helps ensure productivity and is thus has been important, more than ever now, to decorate it with efficient elements. The key has been to paint the space a light colour to make it look more spacious and bright.

Additionally, using task lights has made it easier to work during the day and clamp-on lamps for tiny spaces. Tricks have been to keep it organized by reusing cans, vases, and cups for storage purpose. Also, adding pegs or hooks on walls to use up the wall space for hanging useful items. And voila, the mood has been set!

5. Minimalism

Minimalistic interior designs have been another highlight of the year as people have tried keeping their homes clutter-free. From furniture to accessories, cutting it down to the bare minimums lights up the space immediately. The approach of minimalism is easy to obtain. Pairing the neutral colour of the walls with some warm textures and cosy textiles. Opting for timeless materials like leather, jute or rattan when it comes to picking furniture. Furthermore, selecting monochrome artworks that complement the colour palette of the interiors. And lastly, do not forget to add a pop of colour with plants because no matter which style you’re going for you can never go wrong with greens.
